Exercises for Women | Work It Wednesday: Stronger Pushups With Ballerina Toes

Sometimes to get stronger at something, you have to first get weaker.

Or maybe, expose your weaknesses so you can improve them is more accurate.

And when it comes to rocking out pushups, there is one mistake I see a lot of women making… especially when they begin to get tired.

This mistake slows progress towards real strength while robbing the rest of your body from the benefits of pushups.

The Mistake: Leaning back into your toes.

When this happens:

Your shoulders fall behind your wrists.

Your butt starts to creep higher.

And your pushups pretty much fall to pieces.

The fix will means you will have to expose a new weakness… but as long as you stick with it… and use some of my other modifications… you will get STRONG.

The Fix #1: Ballerina Toes

I call them ballerina toes. Get up on your very tips of your toes… the tippy tippy toes!

This will force you to put as much weight as possible over your upper body. You core will need to engaged all the time and your legs need to be held tight.

You’ll feel the difference immediately.

The Fix #2: Sliders

Go to your local hardware store and buy a small pack of carpet sliders. They are super cheap. I bought eight for less then $5.

As you get tired you will probably start to push more weight on your feet…
Not with the sliders you won’t!

Any excessive weight you put on your feet, the sliders will start to move back and you’ll either fall or you’ll have to pull your weight back over your arms.

Sliders are a great way to work on your pushup endurance strength.

Get Weight Over Your Hands

Strength Tip: Add some weight to your pushups using a book bag or sandbag or something soft but heavy… and combine this weight with the fixes above.

This will allow you to build your maximum strength which is harder to do with pushups.
